Almost wasn’t going to do a Christmas tree this year. In an apartment as small as ours, it takes some accommodating, but 2 days before Christmas, I woke up straight in bed and had an idea! The year before I’d found ten porcelain bisque horns from Pottery Barn, and after a quick calculation in my head of one row of one, one row of two, one row of three and one row of four, one plus two plus three plus four equals ten, I knew I had it. A quick trip to Grandpa’s christmas trees in Palo Alto with the question of “How much for an armload of Christmas tree trims?” The answer came “$3 for all you can carry.” Ten nails in the wall, ten horns on the nails, ten bunches of pine in the horns and twenty hand painted Mexican tin ornaments from my L.A. days later, and I had my space saving wall mounted tree, mostly 2D but a little 3D, simple, graphic, fun and sassy, impact as good as full tree and effort, expense and space demands mach smaller, I was pretty pleased with myself and took it as a good sign for just how much can be done with less given an extra measure of inspiration, a great direction to be moving in for the new year!
